The Smith-Cannon House is a main attraction in the area and a fantastic example of Timmonsville’s history. The home was originally developed in honor of Charles Aurelius Smith, who was a governor for South Carolina in 1915. The house was built with an asymmetrical plan, reflecting Victorian era architecture and the Queen Anne style of the past. Timmonsville was founded in 1854 by John Morgan Timmons. John Morgan Timmons was a Baptist minister of French Huguenot teachings. He followed the French protestant religion as taught by theologian John Calvin. John Morgan Timmons was a pastor for 45 years at Elim Baptist Church at Effingham, which is only minutes from Timmonsville. John Morgan Timmons would go on to become one of America’s Revolutionary Patriots. Not only was John Timmons a large landowner and a businessman, he was also a signer on the ordinance of Secession on December 20, 1860, which precipitated the American Civil War.
