Although Marion is considered a pretty little town today, the city underwent hard times before it could be the city we know now. Marion’s first settlers were the Pee Dee, Cheraw, and Waccamaw Indians. These Native American tribes were attracted to Marion because of its natural resources and ideal location. Here Indian tribes were able to access the sea, the Little Pee Dee River, the Great Pee Dee River, and Catfish Creek. These resources made it easier for Indian tribes to hunt and grow food. 

Marion was also a part of the Revolutionary War, particularly between the years 1779-1782. Members of the community fought on both sides, right near what is known as the center of the city today. The city began planting its roots around this time. By 1798, the courthouse districts were established. 

Thomas Godbold was a prominent settler and land owner in Marion around the year 1799. Thomas Godbold is responsible for the layout of the city’s village square, as well as depicting businesses, government offices, and lots for residences. Marion county’s first courthouse was completed in 1800 and later reconstructed in 1853. This courthouse is one of the largest in South Carolina. The courthouse sits just across from the Francis Marion statue.

The city was named after General Francis Marion in 1847. He was the notorious “Swamp Fox” of the Revolutionary War. This statue honors the General in Marion’s square, and reminds residents and visitors of the city’s historical significance. Marion had claimed about 1,150 acres with about 90 structures and several monuments in the National Register of Historic Places. If you are interested in Marion’s history, you will find around 30 of these buildings and one statue on the National Register of Historic Places website.
