Hartsville’s humble beginnings date back to 1817, when Thomas Edward Hart purchased 900 acres of its beautiful land. He went on to build the Kalmia Plantation on Black Creek, which put Hartsville on the map. It is no wonder that the city still bears Thomas Edward Hart’s name. The Kalmia Plantation was established in 1820 and immediately began production of cotton and tobacco. The city continued to undergo major changes, as Thomas’ son, John Lide Hart, developed the Hartsville Plantation. The Hartsville Plantation created a carriage factory, grist mill, steam-powered sawmill, and more. 

The story of Hartsville Plantation still lives on, as its original site is now lovingly referred to as downtown Hartsville. This downtown area offers a variety of shops, restaurants, gardens, art, and more to peruse. Hartville’s development was largely influenced by James Lide Coker and his family. Mr. Coker and his family would go on to develop an oil mill, a seed company, a fertilizer plant, and the iconic J.L. Coker and Company General Store. The J.L. Coker and Company General Store is now a landmark in the downtown area with a stately brick storefront. 

The Coker’s did not stop there, they found that education was extremely important for this up and coming city and its residents. They started the Welsh Neck High School, which is the predecessor to Coker University. Today, Coker University is ranked among the “Best Colleges” by the U.S. News & World Report and the Princeton Review. The Coker family’s most notable accomplishment in Hartsville came out of the Southern Novelty Company, which is now the Sonoco Products Company. The Sonoco Products Company is still a major provider of packaging, industrial products, and more, in the US today. 

Present day Hartsville offers a wide variety of entertainment, restaurants, shops, art, and so much more. However, its history remains imprinted on the community. It is no surprise that Hartsville is known for its family oriented nature, as its beginnings flourished because of the Coker and Hart families. James L Coker’s son and his wife kept this spirit alive as they continued Hartsville’s legacy. Most residents here would suggest making your first stop at Kalmia Gardens. The Gardens founder, Mrs. David Robert Coker, planted an array of exotic plants that still grow today. The Kalmia Gardens stretch 35-acres and include a botanical garden and the original home of Thomas E. Hart. This garden has been open to the public since 1935 and is a main point of interest along the South Carolina cotton trail. Visitors will see everything from rhododendrons, camellias, azaleas, tea-olives, and dogwoods. The main attraction is the Kalmia latifolia which roams the gardens. The Kalmia latifolia is the beautiful flower that Kalmia Gardens is named after.
