The city’s origin starts with John W. Dillon, whose goal was to propel economic development in the area, with an emphasis on agriculture and transportation. In an effort to build Dillon, John W. Dillon persuaded the Wilson Short Cut Railroad to lay tracks that would lead through the city. This helped the city transport cotton and tobacco to a larger area. Dillon saw massive economic development, as local products could be easily shipped to a wide span of areas. John W. Dillon’s effort led to a thriving downtown area, with buildings erected by renowned architects.
Dillon is located along I-95, right at the South Carolina/North Carolina border. This little spot hosts a well-known landmark, South of the Border. This roadside attraction is located in the small neighboring town of Hamer, allowing residents of Dillon easy access to this iconic spot. There are plenty of fun things to do in the area. If you love fishing, you will definitely want to visit the Little Pee Dee River. Many also enjoy camping and picnics at the Little Pee Dee State Park. The Twin Lakes Country Club, also known as the City of Dillon Municipal Golf Course, is an 18-hole course with a pool and clubhouse.

Depression-era structures have typical, low relief detailing and vertical piers. Even corner stores and banks feature Classical Revival styles, while the rest of the downtown area features a variety of decorative buildings.
The historic courthouse has a neo-classical style, which is a true sight to behold. Main Street is lined with modest commercial stores, which anchor the downtown area and its intersecting railroad corridor. This spot is now listed in the National Register of Historic Places as of January 24, 2003. Dillon’s residential district features 60 historic homes. Dillon aims to preserve its unique characteristics by working with the National Park Service and the South Carolina Department of archives and history. Landscaping and properties are regulated by the Board of Architectural Review (BAR). This means all changes need to be approved by the city.
There are a variety of local landmarks in the area including the active CSX and Amtrak Train Depot, which was reconstructed in 1905. You can find Dillon’s Mayor’s Wall and the Mayor’s Clock at the CSX and the depot. Many enjoy the historic commercial properties located in downtown Dillon. An incredible historic site in the city is the Main Street United Methodist Church, which boasts architectural details that date back to 1892. Veterans Square and the original Downtown Dillon Theater also offer a plethora of historical background about Dillon.
