Many homes in Chesterfield were built in this style, with the exception of very few. The Austin-Craig House is the only known antebellum house in the area. This home was built in 1858, and stands today as a rare example of divergence from the typical architectural styles in Chesterfield before the Civil War.
Chesterfield has a long standing history that dates back over 225 years. The town began when settlers arrived in the 1700s. By the 1800s the area was thriving in industrial development. The town had a blacksmith, a cabinet maker, iron foundry, harness shop, grist mill, and saw mill. The county was named after Phillip Stanhope, an English statesman and the 4th Earl of Chesterfield. Mr. Stanhope is known as the commissioner of the 1st Chesterfield style sofa, which still exists today.
In the mid-18th century, Welsh settlers from Pennsylvania and Delaware migrated to the area because of its incredible agricultural opportunities. The Scotch-Irish settlers joined the Welsh settlers at a later date. Chesterfield’s original courthouse was built around 1785, and then rebuilt in 1825. This is where one of the 1st Secession meetings was held in 1860, leading up to the Civil War. The courthouse later faced tragedy at the hands of General Sherman and his troops.
General Sherman and his troops passed through the town and remained there for a short period. During this time, the troops set the courthouse on fire, which in-turn destroyed all records. Over the next 20 years, county business and government records were kept at the Methodist church. Another courthouse was built in 1884, proving the resilient nature of Chesterfield from the very beginning.
